We are delighted to have supported the construction of the Courtauld Gallery’s new drawing gallery. Carved out of what used to be the Keeper’s apartment of the old Royal Academy, the new gallery is the first dedicated space for the display of the Courtauld’s remarkable collection of 7,000 drawings. The gallery has long been supported by distinguished collectors of British drawings including Sir Robert Witt (1872-1952), William Spooner (1882-1967) and the late Dorothy Scharf (1942-2004) and consequently has an outstanding but under explored collection. The new Gilbert and Ildiko Butler Drawings Gallery is a great addition to the Courtauld and will enable the curators, Stephanie Buck and Rachel Sloan, to mount regular exhibitions; the current display includes a number of important, but rarely seen, British drawings including great sheets by Romney and Fuseli and a remarkable portrait of a signwriter by the pastellist John Russell.
